Trying to be cool
but mostly a fool.
The tin man holds
on to a cloud, as
palm tree sheaves
rattle, and
water in the pool
responds--
the sun continues
it solitary journey
and the palm leaves
yellow
as a radio takes up space
in my head, and
I must say
my tan is coming-along
despite the state of
the nation.
Girls
I laid on the grass
in my bathing suit
and looked at the women
in their suits
and after my older brother
asked if I wanted to go into the pool
I said "no"
and he said, to my cousins
"he wants to stay and look at
girls"
and my cousins laughed
and I said "no I don't!"
and they laughed harder
as I was embarrassed
and confused
because I did want to look at
girls
but could not admit it
and felt that
I had to pretend otherwise--
say I did not want to look, even
that I did not like looking...
Be a prig.
Crows
winging their way through
bright white, blue, gray sky as
some kind of beautiful dream goes on
in the stratosphere today. Meanwhile,
down here in Livermore--houses
anchored to immovable shore--
a breeze moves leaves (Kelly green
all summer) white palms upheld for alms
from the Great Giver, 93 mill. miles distant.
